- ECR vs Non-ECR:
- An Emigration Check Required is nothing but a verification process that an individual has to go through if they plan to travel to certain countries for work as unskilled workers. The main reason for indicating ECR in passports is to ensure that unskilled workers or anyone with less education are not exploited when they visit certain countries for work. Individuals with ECR notation on their passports need to get clearance from the Protector of Emigrants(POE) to ensure they are safe and their employment is in-line with proper rules and not they are not exploited when they travel to certain countries for work.
- Anyone below 18yrs or above 50yrs, professional degree holders, gazetted officers, IT payers and their spouses/children, Polytechnic diploma holders, permanent visa holders of USA/UK/Aus, official/diplomatic passport applicants are all considered to be Non-ECR category who do not require emigration check. Such persons need to carry copies of any of the supporting documents during the PSK appointment.

- Tatkaal Appointments: A Tatkaal application is not only to get an early appointment but also for faster processing. For example, a Tatkaal application would be processed under post (police) verification , ie, police verification after issuance of passport if PV is needed. The print queue is also separate thus ensuring faster print of Tatkaal passports i.e. a Tatkaal passport would be dispatched within 1-3 days of applicant visiting PSK as against a Normal application which would take longer. The fee for Tatkaal application is higher than normal.
